InfoState Senator George L. Gunther, Republican from Stratford, is currently serving his 20th term; he has the title of Deputy Minority Leader-at-Large. A retired Naturopathic physician, "Doc" has served on the Public Health Committee since he arrived in the Senate in 1967, serving twice as Senate Co-Chair; he is currently Ranking Member. He is also Ranking Member of the Regulation Review Committee, having served as Co-Chair in alternating terms for more than 30 years. He is also a member of the Legislative Management Committee.

Recipient of numerous national and state awards, including National Water Conservationist of the Year for Connecticut by Connecticut State League of Sportsmen, National Wildlife Federation, and Sears Roebuck Foundation; Environmental Conservation Award, Long Island Sound America; and Special Recognition Award, Fairfield County League of Sportsmen's Clubs, among others in the environmental field, Senator Gunther served on the Environment Committee for more than 20 years. Known as "the father of the environment" in Connecticut, he has been responsible for many of the landmark environmental laws in effect, having sponsored the Tidal Wetlands Law, Inland Wetlands Law, Housatonic River Estuary Commission, and the establishment of the Bi-State Long Island Sound Marine Resources Committee which New York joined in 1989 and which he currently serves as Connecticut Chair. He is also a leader in the current fight to preserve Long Island Sound's ecology by limiting the number of underwater cable crossings to Long Island.

Senator Gunther served as State Chair for 11 years of the American Legislative Exchange Council, the largest bipartisan membership association of state legislators. He has also served as a Member of ALEC's National Board of Governors since 1992. He has also served, and is currently serving, as a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission where he has served as Connecticut's Legislative Commissioner for more than 26 years.

Throughout his service in the State Legislature, Senator Gunther has also sponsored effective far-reaching legislation in the areas of criminal justice, establishment of the State Properties Review Board which has saved the state millions of dollars by watch-dogging state contracts and leases, and public health.

A strong believer in fostering international understanding, creation of jobs, and cultural exchanges, Senator Gunther has sponsored the Sister-State relationship with Baden-Württemberg (Germany) and German-American, Romanian-American, Austrian-American, Republic of China (Taiwan)-American, Shandong Province in China, Polish-American, and Hungarian-American Days, hosting official delegations from these countries at the Capitol and going on official visits to Germany, Taiwan, and mainland China.

The American Festival Shakespeare Theater located in Senator Gunther's hometown of Stratford has fallen into disrepair; the Stratford delegation, led by Senator Gunther, sponsored legislation to restore this renowned landmark and return it to its days of glory. Three years ago, the State Bond Commission, through Senator Gunther's efforts, awarded the Theater $500,000.

Senator Gunther has championed the restoration of the H.M.S.ROSE, replica of a pre-Revolutionary War British ship, the original of which was responsible for the founding of the United States Navy. The largest wooden sailing ship afloat, the ROSE carries 28 working cannon and is certified as a Coast Guard Sail Training Vessel. Formerly berthed in nearby Bridgeport, the ROSE has toured the Great Lakes on numerous occasions and has recently sailed on a trip to Bristol, England, and Europe. Senator Gunther sponsored the legislation making the H.M.S. ROSE Connecticut's naval militia.

Gustave Whitehead's manned powered flight in 1901 in Bridgeport, Connecticut preceded the Wright Brothers' Kitty Hawk flight by two years; Senator Gunther successfully sponsored a law calling on the Smithsonian Institution to conduct hearings on the authenticity of the Whitehead flight. To date, the Smithsonian has refused.

Active in local, state, and national politics, Senator Gunther served on his local Board of Education and Town Council and in the early 1960's founded the first Conservation Commissions in the state, establishing also the Connecticut Association of Connecticut Conservationists and serving as its President. He has served as a delegate to State Conventions since he was first elected to office and has been elected a delegate to several Republican National Conventions.

Born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Senator Gunther and his wife, Priscilla, have resided in Stratford since 1944. He is the proud father of three children, grandfather of three, and great-grandfather of eleven-year-old Chloe and year-old Christian..
