InfoAnna Georges Eshoo

First elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1992, Anna G. Eshoo has spent a decade defending consumers, assuring access to health care for families and children, promoting American competitiveness and protecting the environment. She was elected by her colleagues as an At-Large Democratic Whip in the 108th Congress.

As one of the leading Members of the House in responding to the California energy crisis, Rep. Eshoo was determined to bring immediate price relief to consumers who were charged unreasonable electricity rates. She introduced legislation that requires energy companies to base their rates on the actual cost of service, as well as a bill to provide refunds to consumers who were gouged by out-of-state generators who gamed the system.

A guardian of our children, Rep. Eshoo authored landmark legislation that increases pediatric drug research and the development of child-friendly drug formulations. On January 4, 2002, President Bush signed into law her Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act. As a fervent advocate for women, she ensured that low-income women who are diagnosed with breast and cervical cancer receive treatment.

Rep. Eshoo hails from the heart of Silicon Valley and her belief in American competitiveness runs deep. She led the fight to create uniform standards limiting frivolous lawsuits, saving investors and the high-tech industry billions of dollars. Rep. Eshoo's bill authorizing electronic signatures brought commerce into the digital age and is the model for digital signatures by the European Union. As founding member of the Internet Caucus, she created a program to provide discounts to schools and libraries for Internet access.

A tireless crusader on behalf of the environment, Rep. Eshoo has long argued that the best way to achieve energy security and reduce our dependence on foreign oil is to invest in energy efficient technologies and raise fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks. For this reason, she introduced legislation to eliminate the SUV loophole and increase Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency to 40 miles per gallon by 2012. She also fought hard to forestall the Bush Administration's efforts to open up offshore drilling in coastal areas throughout the U.S., including California and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Time and again, she has received the highest ratings from the League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club.

Rep. Eshoo was appointed in January 2003 to the House Intelligence Committee and she continues to serve on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee. She co-chairs the House Medical Technology Caucus.

Rep. Eshoo's distinguished public service career began in 1980 when she became the first woman Chair of the San Mateo County Democratic Party. In 1981, she worked as Chief of Staff for California Assembly Speaker Leo McCarthy and a year later, Rep. Eshoo was elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, becoming President of the board in 1986.
