InfoIt's not just a two-way race for mayor.

Libertarian Kimberly Swanson is mounting a long-shot bid against Republican incumbent Bob Walkup and Democrat Tom Volgy.

It is doubtful, though, that her small-is-better, anti-tax approach to government will attract anything more than a handful of backers.

If the last election is any guide, Swanson will get less than 6 percent of the vote. Libertarian Ed Kahn pulled in 4,834 votes in 1999, when he went up against Walkup and Democrat Molly McKasson. It amounted to 5.6 percent of the ballots cast. No Libertarians ran two years ago in the last City Council election.

The latest numbers from the City Clerk's Office show that 3,252 Tucsonans are registered Libertarians, out of a pool of 223,108 eligible voters.

None of this deters Swanson, who has run unsuccessfully for the Legislature twice. Her 2002 Senate campaign was distinguished by ads in which she posed wearing a red, white and blue bikini. She is running this time, she says, to give voters a choice.

Swanson is opposed to Propositions 200 and 201, the transportation initiatives on this year's ballot.
