InfoMs. Gill was serving her fourth term in the Assembly when she was elected to the Senate in November, 2001. She was re-elected five times.

Senator Gill sponsored the law criminalizing the practice of racial profiling. She also sponsored laws making human trafficking a crime, expanding health insurance coverage for persons age 18 to 30, and requiring a voter-verified paper record for electronic voting machines.

She has also secured significant funding for community-based organizations that provide services for women and children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. She sponsored the 2006 law allowing municipalities to establish needle exchange programs as part of the effort to prevent disease transmission associated with sharing needles. She has also written legislation that would ensure counseling and prenatal care information to pregnant women who test positive for HIV. She also sponsored a law providing loans and training to women small business owners.

In response to the crisis in Darfur, Senator Gill sponsored a law prohibiting the state pension fund from investing in companies that conduct business in Sudan.

Ms. Gill was born March 15, 1948, in Glen Ridge and is a graduate of Upsala College and Rutgers University School of Law. She was admitted to the bar in 1976. She was a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Harry Hazelwood, Jr., then served five years as a public defender in Essex and Passaic counties. She is a member of the New Jersey and federal bars, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Ms. Gill is a practicing attorney, a mother and grandmother.
