InfoEllen Jaffee represents the 95th Assembly District in Rockland County, which includes Orangetown and most of the Town of Ramapo. Assemblywoman Jaffee served as a Rockland County Legislator from 1998 through 2006 and as a Suffern Village Trustee from 1995 through 1997.

Since her arrival in Albany in January 2007, Ms. Jaffee has focused on legislative and budgetary issues that matter to Rockland: a fairer funding formula for education, affordable housing, quality childcare options, a cleaner environment, government reform, increased funding for County antiterrorism programs, and initiatives to help financially strapped taxpayers. Ms. Jaffee has been appointed to serve on four Assembly committees: Environmental Conservation, Consumer Affairs, Mental Health, and Children and Families.

In the 2007 Legislative Session, Assemblywoman Jaffee has cosponsored over 150 pieces of legislation including a series of bills aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in New York State. Among her other cosponsored legislation are bills that: prevent predators from using the internet to entice minors; expand access to mental health records for parents and guardians; and reform the Rockefeller Drug Laws. Thus far she has introduced a comprehensive well-testing law as well as several bills to expedite property transactions in towns in her district. In her work with Consumer Affairs, Assemblywoman Jaffee is focusing on abusive practices in the credit card industry as well as on the crisis in the sub-prime mortgage market.

As a Rockland County Legislator, Assemblywoman Jaffee served as the Chair of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee; Vice-Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee; Co-Chair of the Commission on Women’s Issues; Vice-Chair of the Multi-Services Committee; Chair and Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on Transportation; Chair of the Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Town and Village Concerns; and Co-Chair of the Subcommittee on Arts, Culture and Tourism.

Ms. Jaffee authored an innovative county law requiring well water testing in residential housing – ensuring the quality of drinking water for thousands. She also held hearings and sponsored legislation to assess Rockland County’s water supply as well as a local law banning the sale of mercury thermometers, thermostats, etc. In 2005, Congressman Eliot Engel appointed Ms. Jaffee to the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Management Council.

As Vice-Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, Assemblywoman Jaffee worked to keep Rockland’s taxes low and stable, while balancing the needs of the community. Ms. Jaffee helped assure that tobacco settlement funds were used for health programs, such as tobacco prevention programs, and for BEAT (Breast Education and Treatment).

During her tenure as Co-Chair of the Committee on Women’s Issues, Ms. Jaffee established the Breast Cancer Task Force in Rockland County and worked to ensure that all women, regardless of socio-economic status, have access to health care. She also enabled the American Cancer Society bring free or low-cost mammograms to women.

Assemblywoman Ms. Jaffee assisted in developing a program to fill the gaps in services to children, youth, and families at risk in the County. Initiatives included increasing access to quality child care and providing a safe environment where non-custodial parents and children could visit together. Ms. Jaffee also sponsored the Quality Child Care Campaign to enable local day care facilities to meet nationally recognized accreditation standards.

In response to requests by seniors, Ms. Jaffee collaborated with the County Transportation Department establishing the “Loop 3” Shuttle bus for residents in Western Ramapo. She also authored legislation to provide Domestic Partner benefits for Rockland County government employees. To honor community volunteers, Ms. Jaffee created the Pride of Rockland Award, an ongoing and popular program.

A Brooklyn native, the Assemblywoman and her husband Steve moved to Rockland County in 1978, settling in Suffern. Their children are Marc and Allison and their spouses, Julia and Steven. They have three grandchildren Daniel, Miles, and Jade. Ms. Jaffee received her B.A. from Brooklyn College and her M.S. in Special Education from Fordham University; she was formerly Educational Consultant and Resource Room teacher at Pomona Middle School.
