InfoNY State Assemblyman, 1992, 1995-2004, 2007-Present.

Westchester County Legislator, 1993.

Michael J. Spano, a lifelong Yonkers resident and staunch advocate of children's issues, was first elected to the State Assembly in 1992 as its youngest member. Assemblyman Spano has developed a strong relationship with his Yonkers constituents, representing not only their interests, but providing programs and sponsoring outreach efforts to ensure he reaches the needs of his entire district.

The Assemblyman began his career by successfully lobbying to save the "Yonkers only" Assembly seat after the state's reapportionment plan eliminated the district after his election. Now in his sixth term as a New York State representative, the Assemblyman has taken on a greater leadership role both in Albany and his community. This year, he was named as Secretary of the Minority Conference. In addition, the Assemblyman is a member on the Standing Committees of Codes, Ways and Means and Children and Families.

As a champion of children's issues Assemblyman Spano fought hard to pass legislation for children such as Megan's Law which protects our youngsters from sexual predators. He also proposed legislation to prevent children from being targeted on the Internet and called for the New York State Department of Health to coordinate a public education campaign on the dangers of Ecstasy use among teenagers.

Assemblyman Spano has also taken a proactive approach to the increasing national trend of school violence by holding a Town Hall meeting to discuss what can be done to prevent violent episodes in our schools. More than 75 students, parents, teachers and community leaders engaged in an open and honest dialogue this spring that shed light on preventative measures to a potentially dangerous problem.

The Assemblyman sponsors common-sense proposals for both our children and our pocketbooks such as requiring children to wear seat belts on school buses and returning the $2.7 billion 2000 budget surplus to the State taxpayers. Currently he sponsors a measure that would open up the legislative process and budget hearings to the public by putting cameras in the State Assembly. He also supports a six-point plan that would eliminate the State's notoriously late budgets.

Prior to his re-election to the Assembly in 1994, he served as a Westchester County Legislator. The Assemblyman chaired the Yonkers Columbus Quincentennial Committee and serves as a member of the New York Guard and on numerous civic organizations.

The Assemblyman is the son of Westchester County Clerk Leonard Spano and brother to Senator Nick Spano.

The Assemblyman and his wife, Mary (Calvi) Spano, WCBS-TV Weekend News Anchor and as a General Assignment Reporter, reside in the Colonial Heights section of Yonkers with their three children, Michael Jr., Alexandra Rose and Christopher.
