InfoKIDDER, Jefferson Parish, a Delegate from the Territory of Dakota; born in Braintree, Orange County, Vt., June 4, 1815; attended the common schools and was graduated from the Norwich Military Academy, Northfield, Vt.; engaged in agricultural pursuits and teaching; studied law at Montpelier; was admitted to the bar in 1839 and practiced at Braintree and West Randolph; member of the State constitutional convention in 1843; State�s attorney 1843-1847; member of the State senate in 1847 and 1848; Lieutenant Governor of Vermont in 1853 and 1854; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1856; moved to St. Paul, Minn., in 1857; affiliated with the Republican Party in 1860; member of the house of representatives of Minnesota in 1863 and 1864; moved to Vermillion, Dak., having been appointed by President Lincoln as associate justice of the supreme court of Dakota Territory February 23, 1865; reappointed by President Grant April 6, 1869; again appointed March 18, 1873, and served until February 24, 1875, when he resigned, having been elected to Congress; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1879); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1878; appointed justice of the supreme court of Dakota Territory by President Hayes on April 2, 1879; reappointed by President Arthur on April 27, 1883, and served until his death; died in St. Paul, Minn., October 2, 1883; interment in Oakland Cemetery.
