Info | A native Bronxite, Ms. Greene is a graduate of Livingston College, Rutgers University, where she majored in Community Development, and was a former public agency administrator and public official. She has represented the 77th Assembly District since 1982.
Assemblywoman Greene has used her urban planning skills to negotiate for stabilized housing and effective tenant groups; a strengthened business community; and above all, skills development for those who seek to improve their status. She regularly sponsors educational and informational seminars to aid her constituents on issues of current concern. She taught at Antioch College, lectured at numerous universities in the metropolitan area, served as a major proposal writer and is an experienced counselor.
Greene has been a recipient of the NAACP's Woman of the Year Award; Morrisania Education Council's Distinguished Community Leadership Award; New York State's Brotherhood Award, which is given to an elected official who promotes brotherhood by word and deed; Alpha Kappa Alpha's Organizational Impact Award and scores of other notable honors.
Greene serves as the Chairwoman of the Assembly Standing Committee on Banks. Assemblywoman Greene is the first woman ever to Chair this powerful Committee. She is the former Chair of the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection. She is a member of the Rules, Cities, Education, and Social Services Committees as well as a member of the Subcommittee on School Violence. Greene was also reelected Secretary of the Bronx County Democratic Committee and Bronx County's Executive Committee.
In 1994, Assemblywoman Greene was awarded a gold helmet by the NYS Head Injury Association for her Bicycle Helmet Legislation. Her Motor Vehicle Leasing Act, which was passed as a part of the Omnibus Consumer Credit, Disclosure and Deregulation Act of 1994, has been hailed as a landmark decision, the first of its kind in the nation. Greene also sponsored the 1996 Interstate Bank Branching and ATM Safety Act.
Greene has been a stabilizing force in the community for almost three decades and continues to inspire and work for all the people. She is married to a prominent minister and educator, the Honorable Jerome A. Greene, and is the mother of two and grandmother of seven.
