| Info | Deborah Glick is a lifelong resident of New York City who has lived in Greenwich Village for thirty years. She graduated from Queens College of the City University of New York and received a Master of Business Administration from Fordham University. Glick owned and managed a small printing business in TriBeCa before becoming Deputy Director of General Services at the City Department of Housing, Preservation, and Development, where she worked until May, 1990.
Deborah's civic activity began in college and her involvement in grass roots organizing continues today. She has focused on areas relating to civil rights, reproductive freedom, health care, lesbian and gay rights, the environment, housing, higher education, social justice, and the arts. She has served on Community Board 2 in Manhattan and worked with the National Organization for Women, the Women's Political Caucus, and the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League.
Glick is the first openly lesbian or gay member of the State legislature. Her priorities in this area include passage of the sexual orientation non-discrimination act (SONDA) which was finally signed into law in December of 2002 and state-wide domestic partnership registry which is still awaiting passage. She has worked on issues of concern to women for thirty years, including advocating for reproductive freedom, a change in the rape statutes, and women's health concerns. The Women's Health and Wellness Act, a bill promoting early detection and prevention of certain medical conditions affecting women including breast cancer and osteoporosis, became law on January 1, 2003.
Deborah is serving in her seventh term in the Assembly. During her years in the Assembly, she has been a strong advocate for tenants rights and has sponsored and won renewal of the Loft Law. This law brings formerly commercial buildings up to residential code and protects current tenants, many of them artists, from eviction.
Ms. Glick has always been a strong proponent of the arts and has consistently advocated for increases in funding statewide because of her belief that the arts play a critical role in the economic and cultural life of a vibrant New York City and New York State.
In January 2001, Deborah was made Chair of the Assembly Social Services Committee. This committee works to protect the interests of New York's most vulnerable individuals who are receiving or participating in government assistance programs. Ms. Glick has served as the Chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Standing Committee on Human Services and Welfare since August 29, 2002. She is also a member of the NCSL Task Force on Welfare Reauthorization.
Prior to this appointment, Deborah was Chair of the Assembly Committee on Ethics and Guidance, which ensures financial disclosure compliance, and issues opinions on a number of important matters. In addition, she was Chair of the Task Force on People with Disabilities, where she presided over an annual Legislative Disability Awareness Day. This event offered an educational opportunity to legislators and the community about the different capabilities present in our citizenry. She has also sponsored successful legislation to make 100 key subway stations in New York City handicap accessible.
As Vice-Chair of the Legislation Commission on Critical Transportation Choices, Glick authored legislation aimed at improving conditions in New York City's mass transit system. She has sponsored legislation promoting pedestrian and driver safety and a phase out of diesel buses to improve air quality in New York City. In 2002, the Legislature passed her graduated licensing bill, which provides a stepped process for young drivers to gain driving experience. It became law on September 15, 2003.
