| Info | Robert A. Straniere, Republican-Conservative, first took the oath of office as a New York State Assemblyman on January 7, 1981. Mr. Straniere was born, raised, and educated in New York City. A graduate of Curtis High School, and Wagner College (cum laude), he received his law degree from New York University, and subsequently earned an L.L.M. degree from New York University Graduate School of Law.
As Assistant Minority Leader of the Assembly's Republican Conference, and New York City's senior Assembly Republican and chief spokesman within that Conference, Mr. Straniere plays an integral role on the Assembly's Republican leadership team and leads the Floor debate for the Conference.
Additionally, Mr. Straniere has received key committee assignments affording him the opportunity to use his ability and experience in those legislative areas of vital concern to Staten Island residents. As a freshman, Assemblyman Straniere was chosen to serve on the Ways and Means Committee, where he continues to play a prominent role in securing funding for the enrichment of educational, cultural, and artistic programs on Staten Island. Mr. Straniere also serves on the Rules Committee and has also been assigned to the Judiciary Committee.
Appointed to the Environmental Conservation Committee for a 11th consecutive term, Mr. Straniere has been invaluable in protecting Staten Island's natural areas. As a member of that committee, Mr. Straniere helps to shape New York's environmental policies, including successful passage of legislation to close the Fresh Kills landfill, and the State purchase of both the St Francis Friary, and Waterside Mt. Loretto as Parkland. The Island legislator's commitment and expertise on environmental issues have earned him the respect of prominent environmental groups. Mr. Straniere is considered a leading Republican Assembly proponent on environmental matters.
Mr. Straniere has utilized his unique blend of legal and legislative expertise in an effort to preserve Staten Island's voice in New York City government. When the United States Supreme Court overruled New York City's governing structure, Mr. Straniere helped enact the Staten Island Secession Referendum Legislation, which was first proposed by the Island lawmaker in 1983. He was instrumental in guiding this unprecedented measure through the Assembly with overwhelming support, setting into motion the Staten Island Secession process and the creation of the Staten Island Charter Commission.
The eleven term veteran lawmaker is a member of the Board of the American Legislative Exchange Council, the Board of the Council of World Regions, Chairman of the International Committee of the Council of State Governments.
Actively involved in the Staten Island community, Mr. Straniere has served as Chair of Community Board 2, and many professional, civic and fraternal groups. The community has recognized Mr. Straniere's involvement and leadership by bestowing, among others, the Order of the Sons of Italy Award for Outstanding Service; the Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai Brith; the Asian American Coalition of Staten Island Community Service Award; and was named Man of the Year: by A Very Special Place, an Island-based organization dealing with the problems of developmental disabilities. The Assemblyman has also been honored by the Staten Island YMCA Counseling Service and Camelot Counseling Center for his legislative support of substance abuse programs for Staten Islanders. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Mr. Straniere proudly holds Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow, Vigil Honors.
Admitted to the New York State Bar, Mr. Straniere maintains a law practice in Staten Island and Manhattan. He is married to the former Ruth Kaner of West Brighton; the couple has four children.
