InfoJack McMullen grew up in a working class neighborhood in then semi-rural Staten Island, New York. His father was frequently out of work due to a chronic illness, which was a source of hardship for the five McMullen children. Jacks first job, at age 10, was selling ice cream on Rockaway Beach in New York. Despite frequent financial hardship, Jacks parents instilled in their children the understanding that education and hard work are the keys to opportunity and success.

Jack enrolled at Columbia University in New York and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.S. in Applied Physics and Electronics Engineering, which prepared him for service in the Navy, starting in 1964, on the staff of Admiral Hyman Rickover in Washington, D.C. Like thousands before and since, Jack entered the Navy both to serve his country and as a way to help pay for his education. In the service, Jack was a manager of the Navys program to outfit its fleet of nuclear-powered submarines with more modern nuclear reactors, and had to qualify for a "Q clearance" -- more restrictive than Top Secret -- to do so. Jack reached the rank of Lieutenant, and left the Navy in 1969 to continue pursuing his education.

Interested in entering the private sector, Jack enrolled at Harvard Business School in 1969 and earned his MBA, with High Distinction, in 1972. Jack also attended Harvard Law School and graduated with Honors in 1973.

.... Jack worked at several Boston-area firms in the 1970s, and eventually founded his own business strategy consulting company. Business strategy consultants are experts at analyzing companies, markets, and trends and then advising company leaders on important business decisions. For example, Jack was part of a small team that was instrumental in saving the American outboard boat motor market from being overtaken by foreign competition in the 1970s. The primary U.S. outboard engine manufacturer hired Jacks team to analyze its production, marketing, and distribution practices and offer advice on how to avoid being overtaken by Japanese companies, which were rapidly gaining ground on the American businesses. The recommendations were adopted and helped save literally tens of thousands of good-paying jobs as this American company (and others afterward) competed against, and defeated, their foreign competitors. The other side of Jacks business was working with entrepreneurs to assist them in developing new products and start businesses in other words, to help job creation.

Jack has frequently served as a teacher or adviser at different times over the course of his career. He was on the faculty of Harvards law and business schools, teaching and researching business strategy, and served as advisor to Democratic Senator Bill Bradley from 1993 to 1996 on crime and Social Security issues. Jack has had a home in Vermont since 1983 and has been living here permanently since the mid-nineties, and has been using his experience to help a variety of Vermont businesses and non-profit charities succeed. His recent involvements include:

Chairman of Governor Douglass Project to Advance Government Efficiency
Pro bono work for the Ruggles House, a shared senior housing facility in Burlington
Member of Committee on Foreign Relations
Board of Directors of the Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation
Board of Directors of Associated Industries of Vermont
Board of Directors of Vermont Council on Economic Education
Board of Directors of Ethan Allen Institute
Jacks life has been guided by the values instilled in him by his family and his mentor, Admiral Rickover (see Jack's tribute to Admiral Rickover here). Inspired by the lessons of the Admirals life, Jack believes that strong preparation for citizenship and work through education, high standards of excellence in personal performance, and a willingness to work hard until an objective is achieved offers anyone the possibility of creating his or her own future. Hand-in-hand with the right to take advantage of our societys unparalleled opportunity, Jack believes, is our duty to give back something of ourselves to make our communities and our nation stronger and even more promising for future generations. Jack is currently involved in helping several Vermont businesses and civic groups become viable local enterprises.
