InfoOne of the framers of Alaska's Permanent Fund, Clark Gruening has been reappointed to a second term on the Permanent Fund Board of Trustees and chosen as its next chair. Gruening, a Juneau lobbyist and attorney, will serve another four-year term ending in 2003.

"Clark has always impressed me with his commitment to the state and his community, and his involvement in, and knowledge of, a wide range of issues," said Governor Knowles, who first appointed Gruening to the Board in July of 1995. "He brings these qualities and continuity to the management of Alaska's Permanent Fund."

Gruening, who has practiced law in Alaska since 1970, is a partner in the law firm of Gruening and Spitzfaden. He served two terms in the state House of Representatives from 1974 to 1978 during which he served on the Finance Committee and State Investment Advisory Committee; and as chairman of the House Special Committee on the Permanent Fund, Gruening played a major role in structuring the Permanent Fund. In 1980, he successfully challenged U.S. Senator Mike Gravel (D), defeating him in the primary. However, he lost the General to Frank Murkowski (R).

"I am proud to be reappointed as a trustee," Gruening said. "With each year, the Fund has grown in importance to the future of our state and I am committed to its continued strength and well-being."

Gruening succeeds Eric Wolforth as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The six-member Board of Trustees serves as the governing body of the state's $25 billion Permanent Fund. The fund was established by a public referendum in 1976 to save a portion of the state's oil wealth.
