| Info | Asa Hutchinson was appointed by President George W. Bush as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration on August 8, 2001. As head of the DEA, Mr. Hutchinson has focused enforcement efforts at top-level drug trafficking organizations, while being a national advocate of increased prevention and treatment programs. To that end, he developed the Integrated Drug Enforcement Assistance (IDEA) Program, which combines law enforcement action with community efforts to keep neighborhoods safe and drug-free.
Administrator Hutchinson has also taken a hard line against drug traffickers-he served the first-ever indictments of known terrorists for drug trafficking. Also during his tenure, the Arellano Felix Organization, Mexico's most powerful and violent drug trafficking group, was targeted, resulting in the arrest of its mastermind, Benjamin Arellano Felix.
Mr. Hutchinson has made communication with the public a priority for his office. He launched a nationwide awareness campaign, "Methamphetamine in America: Not in Our Town," in the Summer of 2002. He has engaged in public debates over the legalization of drugs, and has been one of the administration's most visible spokesmen on the need for a balanced drug policy that combines demand reduction, enforcement, and treatment. Administrator Hutchinson has also been a vocal champion of drug courts-specialized courts for non-violent drug offenders that combine drug treatment and strict accountability to successfully rehabilitate addicts.
Mr. Hutchinson was nominated to be the Administrator of DEA while serving his 3rd term in the U.S. Congress. He was confirmed with a bipartisan vote of 98-1 in the United States Senate.
While in Congress, Mr. Hutchinson showed strong leadership in the fight against drugs. He served on the Speaker's Task Force for a Drug-Free America, a group charged with finding new approaches to reduce drug use among the nation's youth. Mr. Hutchinson also served on the House Judiciary Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Prior to his election to the U.S. Congress in 1996, Asa Hutchinson practiced law in Arkansas for 21 years and has tried more than 100 jury trials. During that time, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as U.S. Attorney for Western Arkansas. Mr. Hutchinson was, at age 31, the youngest U.S. Attorney in the nation.
During his tenure as U.S. Attorney, the FBI awarded Mr. Hutchinson a citation for his successful prosecution of a terrorist group in northern Arkansas known as the Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord (CSA). Wearing a flak jacket, Mr. Hutchinson assisted in the negotiations that led to a peaceful conclusion to what had become a tense three-day standoff between the heavily armed paramilitary group and some 200 law enforcement officers. Mr. Hutchinson then led the successful prosecution of the group on racketeering charges.
