born in Everett, Snohomish County, Wash., May 31, 1912; attended the public schools and Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.; graduated from the law school of the University of Washington at Seattle in 1935; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Everett, Wash.; prosecuting attorney of Snohomish County 1938-1940; attended the International Maritime Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1945 as adviser to the American delegation; elected president of the International Maritime Conference held in Seattle, Wash., in 1946; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-seventh Congress and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3,1941-January 3, 1953); was not a candidate for renomination in 1952; chairman, Committee on Indian Affairs (Seventy-ninth Congress); elected to the United States Senate in 1952 and reelected in 1958, 1964, 1970, 1976 and again in 1982, serving from January 3, 1953 until his death on September 1, 1983 in Everett, Wash.; chairman, Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs (Eighty-eighth through Ninety-fifth Congresses), Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (Ninety-fifth and Ninety-sixty Congresses); chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1960; unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States, 1972 and 1976; interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Everett, Wash.
