InfoLloyd A. Karmeier was born in rural Washington County, Illinois on January 12, 1940 where he attended a one room grade school and graduated as valedictorian in 1958 from Okawville Community High School. He received both his B.S degree in 1962 and his J.D degree in 1964 from the University of Illinois. He and his wife, Mary, reside in Nashville, Illinois and have two children and six grandchildren.

Justice Karmeier clerked for Illinois Supreme Court Justice Byron O. House (1964-1968), served as State’s Attorney of Washington County, Illinois (1968-1972), clerked for United States District Court Judge James L. Foreman (1972-1973) and engaged in the general practice of law with the firm of Hohlt, House, DeMoss & Johnson (1964-1986). He served as Resident Circuit Judge of Washington County (1986-2004) and was elected to the Supreme Court in 2004. He has been admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Justice Karmeier is a member of the Illinois Judges Association, the Washington County, St. Clair County, East St. Louis and Illinois State Bar Associations and is a past member of the American Bar Association and American Judicature Society. He served as member of the Assembly of the ISBA (1996-2002) and is a past chair of the Bench and Bar Section Council.

Justice Karmeier served on the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions in Criminal Cases, and chaired that Committee from 2003 to 2004. He is a member of the Southern Illinois American Inn of Court and was elected President of the Executive Committee in 2003.
