| Info | Thomas W. Alfano was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 9, 1959. He was an honors graduate of St. Pius X Prep Seminary, and class valedictorian at Fordham College, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha. He graduated from Fordham Law School in 1984, and has worked as an attorney at several prominent New York City law firms, including Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He is currently of Counsel to the law firm of Entwistle and Cappucci, LLP, where he specializes in civil litigation. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, the Fordham Law Alumni Association and the Columbian Lawyers Association. Assemblyman Alfano is also active in the National Conference of Insurance legislators (NCOIL).
Prior to being elected to the New York State Assembly in February 1996, Assemblyman Alfano served as counsel to New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos from 1988-1996. He was the Chairman of the Town of Hempstead Public Employees Relations Board from 1990-1996. He is a longtime Committeeman from his hometown of North Valley Stream.
A community leader, Assemblyman Alfano is the past president of the North Valley Stream Kiwanis Club, a member of the Sons of Italy America Lodge, an advisory Board Member of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County Inc., and active in youth athletic leagues in his community.
Assemblyman Alfano has been honored by the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education of Nassau County for his outstanding leadership and support of the Committee's Drug & AIDS prevention programs, and the Nassau County AHRC for his work with mentally retarded and handicapped children. Assemblyman Alfano's efforts in the area of education have been recognized extensively by the groups, schools and education organizations throughout the 22nd Assembly district. The Elmont Inter-School PTA awarded Assemblyman Alfano for his support of the school district's programs. The Gotham Avenue, Clara H. Carlson, Dutch Broadway, Stewart Manor, Alden Terrace and Covert Avenue Schools have bestowed upon the Assemblyman several education recognition awards for his Mentors and Leaders forums held throughout the 22nd district. Local business organizations have also saluted Assemblyman Alfano for his work in assisting the business community. The Franklin Square and Elmont Chambers of Commerce have recognized Assemblyman Alfano for his work with the Governor's Office of Regulatory Reform and local business entities in helping to foster a positive environment for business. Most recently, Assemblyman Alfano was recognized by the West Hempstead Civic Association by being named its "New Centurion" honoree. The new centurion award is in recognition of "forward thinking and forward looking action" in the West Hempstead Community.
In 1999, Assemblyman Alfano was named to the Assembly Minority Leadership to serve as Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Minority Joint Conference Committee. In this capacity, Assemblyman Alfano will be speaking on issues associated with education and health care. In the 2000 session, Assemblyman Alfano was recognized by the Assembly Leadership in his selection to be a member of the State Legislature Budget Conference Committee. As a member of the Transportation, Environmental Conservation and Housing committees, Assemblyman Alfano held a key position in helping restore transportation programs and environmental conservation allocations in the state budget. In the 2001 Legislative session, Assemblyman Alfano was appointed a representative to the Public Protection Committee of the State Legislative Budget Conference Committee.
Assemblyman Alfano is the Ranking Minority Member of the Codes Committee. He also is a member of the Corporations, Authorities and Commissions and Labor Committees.
