Info | HAYES, Everis Anson, a Representative from California; born in Waterloo, Jefferson County, Wis., March 10, 1855; attended the public schools; was graduated from the Waterloo High School in 1873 and from the literary and law departments of the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1879; was admitted to the bar in 1879 and commenced practice in Madison, Wis.; moved to Ashland, Wis., in 1883 and in 1886 to Hurley, Wis., and continued the practice of his profession; moved to Ironwood, Mich., in 1886 and engaged in the mining of ore; moved to San Jose, Santa Clara County, Calif., in 1887 and engaged in fruit raising and mining; with his brother became publisher and proprietor of the San Jose Daily Mercury Herald in 1901; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth and to the six succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1905-March 3, 1919); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1918 to the Sixty-sixth Congress; resumed his newspaper activities in San Jose, Calif., with mining interests in Ironwood, Mich., and Sierra City, Calif.; died in San Jose, Calif., June 3, 1942; interment in Oak Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
