Herbert F. Seawell, Sr., the son of Dr. Virgil Newton Seawell and Ella Croom, was born August 8, 1869, in Duplin County, N.C., and died in 1949. He attended Wake Forest College and UNC Law School, and was admitted to the Bar in 1892. He practiced law in Carthage in 1898 with R. L. Burns, from 1916-1917 with C. M. Land, from 1926 until his retirement with his son, Herbert F. Seawell, Jr., and in 1929 with his son, Henry.
