InfoThomas F. Barraga was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 23, 1943. He attended St. Joseph's Elementary School in Babylon, and graduated from St. Anthony's High School in Smithtown. He graduated from St. John's University with a B.B.A. in Marketing in 1964; from Long Island University in 1972 with a Master of Business Administration; and in 1981 received his Doctorate of Philosophy, Business and Public Administration from Columbia Pacific University. Assemblyman Barraga served six years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a member of Company "C" Fourth Communications Battalion, Huntington, New York, and was honorably discharged August 1966. He currently holds the rank of Major General in the New York Guard and served 53 days of state active duty with Task Force Liberty, the New York Guard component of the 42nd Joint Task Force Rainbow Hope activated for Operation World Trade Center. Maj. Gen. Barraga was awarded the New York State Defense of Liberty Medal with Device for his distinguished service.
Mr. Barraga spent 13 years in the private sector, holding various administrative and sales positions with the American Can Company, Dun and Bradstreet, Inc., and Pfizer, Inc. In 1977, he was appointed Town Clerk of the Town of Islip, and was elected to that office in November, 1977, 1979 and 1981. He was first elected to the Assembly in the 1982 General Election.

Assemblyman Barraga is a former Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Suffolk Community College. He is a member of the Sons of Italy-Giuseppe A. Nigro Lodge #2234, Brentwood; the American Legion-West Islip Post #1738; Suffolk Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America; New York Guard Association, Queens; Knights of Columbus-Bishop McDonnell Council #2324, Babylon; Moose Lodge #2044, Bay Shore; West Islip Chamber of Commerce; and member/usher of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip.

Mr. Barraga has been honored with awards and citations from many organizations: The Employer Alliance for Affordable Health Care's "A" Award; A Program Planned for Life Enrichment and the Fight Against Drug Abuse (APPLE); Ancient Order of Hibernians; Boy Scout Troop 179-West Islip; Child Care Council of Suffolk County; Coalition of Italo-American Associations; Eastern Suffolk BOCES Student Assistance Services; Farm Bureau of New York; FOCUS - For Our Children and Us, Inc.; Long Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects; Longwood School District Legislative Committee; N.Y.S. Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials; N.Y.S. Congress of Parents and Teachers; Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association; New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms; REFIT; School Administrators Association of N.Y.S.; Senior Citizens of Ronkonkoma; Suffolk County Retired Fire Fighters; Suffolk County Park Rangers PBA; West Islip Youth Development Corps; West Islip/Bay Shore Moose Lodge 2044; and the West Islip Little League.

Assemblyman Barraga is the Ranking Minority Member of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. He is a member of the Assembly Standing Committee on Rules. Previously he served as the Assistant Minority Leader of the State Assembly. Prior to becoming the Assistant Minority Leader in 1999, Assemblyman Barraga served for a decade as the Ranking Minority Member on the Assembly Education Committee. He was also a Commissioner on the N.Y.S. Temporary State Commission on the Distribution of State Aid to Local School Districts, and was honored by Gov. Mario M. Cuomo in recognition of his distinguished service.

Assemblyman Barraga and his wife, Joanne (nee Kurtz), reside in West Islip. They are the parents of two daughters and have four grandchildren. He is the son of Marie Lennon Barraga and the late Thomas Barraga.
