Info | Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 6 April 1996. Elder Uchtdorf was serving as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy at the time of his call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He had previously served as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, beginning in April 1994. Elder Uchtdorf has served in the North America West, Utah South, Europe, Europe East, and Europe West Area Presidencies.
In 1965, Elder Uchtdorf joined Lufthansa German Airlines as an airline pilot. He has held various management positions with Lufthansa. He was an airline captain from 1970 to 1996 and was licensed to fly the 727, B737, A300, DC10, and B747 aircraft as check and training captain. During the last seven years of his professional career and at the time of his call as a full-time Church leader, he held the position of senior vice president of flight operations and chief pilot of Lufthansa German Airlines.
Elder Uchtdorf was a board member of various governmental and business executive committees.
A native of Germany, Elder Uchtdorf was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, on 6 November 1940 to Karl Albert and Hildegard E. Opelt Uchtdorf. After a formal education in Zwickau/Sachsen and Frankfurt/Main, Germany, Elder Uchtdorf received an education in engineering. He later studied business administration and international management. He joined the German Air Force and received his wings in the United States as a jet fighter pilot in 1962.
His Church involvement began when his family joined the Church in 1947 in Zwickau, in the former German Democratic Republic. At the time of his call in 1994 to be a Church leader, he was serving as a stake president in Germany.
Elder Uchtdorf and his wife, Harriet Reich, are parents of two children and have five grandchildren.
