| Info | Patricia L. Acampora has represented the First Assembly District since 1993. Prior to being elected, she worked as assistant to County Executive Robert Gaffney and liaison to the Suffolk County Legislature. There she initiated and headed the county's Internship Program and served on the Family Violence Task Force and the Legal Systems Committee. From 1983 to 1990, she served as executive assistant to her predecessor in the Assembly.
Assemblywoman Acampora is the Ranking Republican Member of the Labor Committee, and a member of the Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee, the Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions Committee, and the Governmental Employees Committee. She also serves as a member of the National Legislative Task Force on Criminal Justice and the Assembly Health Care Task Force. She has consistently provided dedicated service to constituents and worked to tackle governmental problems at all levels; to help one resident or to work for the benefit of all residents of the First Assembly District and the State of New York.
A longtime advocate for the environment, Ms. Acampora has successfully obtained record state funding for solid waste and recycling projects, preservation of farmlands, the Peconic Estuary, Long Island Sound, the Pine Barrens, and numerous other important projects. She sponsored the 2% Land Bank Bill to preserve East End farmlands and open spaces. When first elected, Ms. Acampora fought for, and was successful in having the Peconic Estuary System included in the 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act to ensure funding to help protect this valued resource. She also successfully sponsored legislation to help protect the waters off Fishers Island.
Because of her strong commitment to health care issues, the Assemblywoman supported the Breast Cancer Registration bill. She sponsors an annual mammography screening day to provide this important service to those women who could not otherwise afford it. The Assemblywoman worked to expand the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) program to help more seniors offset the high costs of prescription drugs.
Among other health-related measures, Assemblywoman Acampora successfully co-sponsored the HIV Notification Law to help reduce death rates and prevent the spread of infection, and she supported the External Appeal Law to ensure that consumer health care rights are protected. In addition, the Assemblywoman worked for and supported the state's Health Insurance Partnership Program, which provides low-cost health insurance to small businesses to make it affordable for employees, as well as the Child Health Plus Program, which provides health care to low-income families.
The Assemblywoman has been steadfast in her commitment to make New York a safer place. She has supported �get tough� anti-crime bills, including Megan's Law, Jenna's Law and Kieran's Law. In order to protect innocent New Yorkers against violent sexual predators, the Assemblywoman is now working to pass a five-bill package that would enact tougher penalties for sex crimes and strengthen the laws to keep criminals off the street.
As a tax fighter, Assemblywoman Acampora worked actively to make the STAR program a reality. She has supported other important tax cuts enabling New York's continuing path to economic recovery. She has been an outspoken advocate for consumer rights and worked tirelessly for the passage of the popular "Do Not Call Registry" law, anti-telephone slamming law, as well as to protect consumers against misleading sweepstakes advertisements and to require businesses to honor gift certificates.
A strong proponent of quality education, the Assemblywoman has successfully worked to bring record funding for our school districts, and to provide more tuition assistance to help college students.
She actively supports numerous youth projects. Assemblywoman Acampora initiated the first Youth Court on Long Island.
This year, Assemblywoman Acampora became the first woman to serve as President of the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators since the bi-partisan conference began nearly three decades ago. A dedicated community leader, she is a member of the Juvenile Diabetes Board, a member of the East End Women's Network, a member of the Women's Legislative Caucus, and a member of the Capital Network Women's Group.
Assemblywoman Acampora's outstanding leadership and many achievements are well recognized. This year, she was named "Woman of the Year" by the New York State Federation of Republican Women. She has been honored by numerous groups and organizations including, the American Red Cross, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the East End Community Preservation Fund, the Sons of Italy Local Lodge, the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff Investigators, and the Suffolk County Republican Women's Organizations, to name a few.
Assemblywoman Acampora was raised and educated on Long Island. For many years, she worked in the private sector in retail management. She was also a vocal community advocate for children's rights and the need to preserve the environment.
She and her husband, Alan Croce, reside in Mattituck. She is the proud mother of two grown daughters, two stepdaughters, and three grandchildren.
