InfoDavid Koon was elected to represent the 135th Assembly District in a special election held in February 1996. He was elected to a full term in November of that year. David serves as a member of the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse; Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry; Local Governments; Small Business; and Library and Education Technology Committees. He is also Vice Chair of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources and Vice Chair of the Legislative Commission on Toxic Substances and Hazardous Waste.

David resides with his wife, Suzanne, in the Village of Fairport. David and Suzanne have a son Jason and a daughter Jennifer (deceased). The Koons are also proud grandparents of Ethan and Vanessa.

A graduate of Fairmont State College in West Virginia, David was employed with Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland, Maryland. At that time, he plunged wholeheartedly into several community activities, such as Church Councilman, Mason, member of the Optimist Club, and Boy Scout Leader.

In 1982, David joined Bausch and Lomb as an Industrial Engineer and moved to Oakland, Maryland. In Oakland, David continued his love of community service as a Cub Scout Master and member of the Executive Board for Scouting, for which he received the Boy Scout's Award of Merit. He played an active role in education as a PTA President and became an active member of the Lions Club and his church.

When Bausch and Lomb moved David and his family to Fairport, a suburb of Rochester, in 1989, David continued to focus on his love of community service. He began serving on the church council and became Chair of the Christian Education Committee at Reformation Lutheran. David and his family were recipients of the Faith in Action Award from the Greater Rochester Community of Churches.

In 1994, David was appointed to Mayor William Johnson's transition team on crime and violence. He then became Co-chair of the Task Force to Reduce Violence. David helped to organize the Rochester Challenge Against Violence, a grassroots campaign that brought 2,000 volunteers into the city. The volunteers spent 15,000 hours proving that people can stop violence by getting involved and working together.

David was given the Peacemaker Award from the Center for Dispute Settlement, and graduated from the Rochester Citizens Police Academy. He was selected for the 1995-96 Class of "Leadership Rochester", a program which identifies committed citizens from diverse constituency groups, educates them in community issues, and trains and develops them to lead the Greater Rochester community to growth and excellence. He was recommended for the New York State Crime Coalition's Crime Prevention Award and President Clinton's Task Force Against Youth Drugs and Violence. In 2004, David received the "911 Professional Award" from the E911 Institute for his work on wireless enhanced 911 issues in New York.

David and his wife, Suzanne, were instrumental in creating and managing the Jennifer Patterson Koon Peacemaking Foundation, in honor of his daughter, through St. John Fisher College. Through this foundation, scholarships for Peace Studies are awarded, and each year a ceremony is held to recognize student and community member peacemakers. From this foundation rose PeaceWorks, an organization in Rochester designed to teach and promote peace-keeping methods to our youth. Last September, the first annual Peace Fair was organized and held in Rochester, promoting peace throughout the community. David is also an active board member for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, donating hours of time to this organization.
