Info | Elected to the New York State Senate in a Special Election in February 2002, Liz Krueger is currently the ranking Democratic member of the Senate Standing Committee on Housing, Construction and Community Development. She is also a member of seven other committees: Banks, Children and Families, Cities, Consumer Protection, Ethics, Rules and Social Services.
Senator Liz Krueger has dedicated her career to issues relating to poverty, and is a nationally recognized expert on the problems of hunger and homelessness, and the lack of affordable housing, healthcare, and job training.
For 15 years, Senator Krueger was the Associate Director of the Community Food Resource Center (CFRC) where she was responsible for directing their efforts to expand access to government programs for low-income New Yorkers. She helped monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Federal and State programs in New York City, identifying barriers to participation, and fighting for improvements in the effectiveness of these programs.
She also designed and managed model walk-in services clinics, and projects for eviction prevention and Food Stamp eligibility that assisted tens of thousands of low-income New Yorkers in avoiding food emergencies and eviction. Each year, her eviction prevention program enables more than 1,500 families to stay in their homes while her food stamp staff helps 30,000 families obtain federally funded food stamps and other nutrition assistance.
Senator Krueger has served as Chair of the New York City Food Stamp Task Force; Co-Facilitator of the New York City Welfare Reform Network; as a board member of the City-Wide Task Force on Housing Court; and as a board member of the NYC Federal Emergency Management Agency Emergency Food and Shelter Program administered by the United Way of Greater New York. Liz Krueger has been active in the development of the NYC Coalition for Real Jobs and the NYC Medicaid Managed Care Task Force. She served as Chair of the New York Human Resources Administration Income Support Advisory Council; Co-Chair of the Manhattan Borough President's Task Force on Education, Employment and Welfare; and Board Chair of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger.
In 1998, CFRC was a recipient of the Progressive Leadership Award from Jobs With Justice New York as a result of Liz Krueger's work on rights for workfare participants and living wages. In 1997, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Hunger Action Network of New York State and received the same honor that year from the Institute on Law and Rights of Older Adults, Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College. In 1998, The Public Health Association of New York City awarded Liz their Media Advocacy Award.
Senator Krueger has also served as an expert witness in class action lawsuits on behalf of impoverished New Yorkers. She has testified more than 30 times, by invitation, before the State Legislature, City Council, the New York City Rent Guidelines Board, and the U.S. Congress.
Prior to joining CFRC, Liz Krueger was the founding Director of the New York City Food Bank, building that organization into one that now serves over 1,100 emergency food programs, senior centers, day care centers, and other community-based programs serving an estimated 5.4 million meals each year. She also successfully lobbied the City and State to establish emergency food programs, in which $12 million of nutritious food is purchased and distributed annually as just part of the Food Bank's overall distribution of over 50 million pounds of food each year.
Senator Krueger is currently a Board Member of the American Jewish Committee, NYC Chapter; the Women's City Club; and the Advisory Board to Hunter College's Center on Family Policy Center.
A graduate of Northwestern University, with a Bachelors degree in Social Policy and Human Development, Senator Krueger also holds a Masters degree from the University of Chicago's Harris Graduate School of Public Policy. Senator Krueger lives on the East Side of Manhattan with her husband, Dr. John E. Seley, a professor of Urban Planning and Geography at The CUNY Graduate Center and Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs.
