| Info | Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) is the oldest of eight children born to Irish immigrants who settled in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn. He attended St. Patrick's and Our Lady of Angels Grammar Schools, New York School of Printing, and John Jay College. He holds an Associate's Degree from St. John's University. Marty and his wife Colleen have two children Michael and P.J.
Senator Marty Golden was elected to represent the 22nd Senate District on November 5, 2002. Brooklyn's 22nd State Senate District includes the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend and parts of Sheepshead Bay, Borough Park and Midwood.
Senator Golden is the Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee. He is also a member of the following Committees: Cities; Codes; Crime Victims, Crime & Corrections; Education; Investigations & Government Operations; Tourism, Recreation & Sports Development; Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs.
First elected in 1997 and re-elected in 2001, Marty Golden represented the 43rd Councilmanic District in the New York City Council which included a large area of his State Senate district. Marty served on the City Council Committees on Finance, Parks and Recreation, Public Safety and State and Federal Legislation, as well as on the Select Subcommittees on Senior Citizen Centers and the Waterfront. In his last year in the Council, Senator Golden also served as Republican whip.
As a Councilmember, Senator Golden established, with the Kings County District Attorney, a program whereby offenders sentenced to community service maintained parks in the district. This program has now been replicated elsewhere in Brooklyn. Golden also worked to find innovative solutions to school crowding, notably the conversion of a one-time telephone company building into administrative and instructional space for Community School District 20, allowing the District to return administrative office space to classroom use throughout the District. He was also a leader in the fight to end the sales tax on clothing purchases of $110 or less; and was an early proponent of turning school security over to the New York City Police Department and giving the Mayor responsibility for the school system.
In the days immediately after 9/11, Councilman Golden's office coordinated the shipment of more than 200 truckloads of food, clothing, and materials to the volunteers working at "Ground Zero." More than 1,000 neighborhood residents participated in this spontaneous volunteer effort that helped demonstrate to the world that America's spirit had not been broken. Golden and his staff also worked with community leaders in the diverse neighborhood he represented to reduce tensions during a very difficult period of our history.
Marty is a former New York City Police Officer who received numerous citations during his ten years with the Police Department. Marty was forced to retire in 1983, after suffering a serious injury while making a narcotics arrest. Upon his retirement from the NYPD, Marty and his family bought the Bay Ridge Manor, a popular catering hall in Brooklyn.
For years, Marty has been enormously active in Brooklyn merchant and community issues. He helped organize the Fifth Avenue Board of Trade, the Voice of Bay Ridge, and the Safe Haven Program, a safety program for Bay Ridge senior citizens and children. He also served as Vice Chairman of Community Board Ten, and in 1995, he was designated by Congresswoman Susan Molinari to represent New York at a conference on small business in Washington, DC.
Marty's hard work and dedication have earned him the recognition of many organizations. He was the recipient of the Man of the Year Award for Bayfort Associations; he is a Lifetime Member of BRAVO Ambulance Service; he was Grand Marshall of the Ragamuffin Parade; Angel Guardian Home's Man of the Year; a recipient of the Paul Adams Award, presented by the Eugene Walsh Conservative Club, and he was given the prestigious Bay Ridge Community Council Civic Award in 1995. Marty was also named Man of the Year by the Helen Keller Home for the Blind and honored by Bay Ridge Center for Older Adults and Heartshare Human Services.
