InfoSenator Carl Andrews, born in Brooklyn, New York was elected to the New York State Senate in a Special Election in February, 2002. Senator Andrews received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Medgar Evers College and received his Master's Degree in African-American Studies from the State University of New York at Albany. Prior to his service in the State Senate, Senator Andrews served as an elected member of Community School Board 17 and District Leader of the 43rd Assembly District.

Senator Andrews' career in government has been extensive. Most recently, he served as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Previous positions include: Director of New York City Government Operations for the New York State Senate's Office of the Minority Leader; Special assistant to the New York State Secretary of State; Community Coordinator for the Department of State, Division of Economic Development; Special Assistant to Assemblyman Albert Vann; Special Assistant to Congressman Major R. Owens; Director of the New York State Immigrant Legislation Assistance Program; Assistant Director of the New York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus; Adjunct Professor at New Rochelle College/Brooklyn Campus and Junior High School Social Studies Teacher.

Senator Andrews became active in the communities of his youth due in large part to inspiration provided by heroes of the Civil Rights movement. Senator Andrews' past affiliations include: Treasurer for the Kings County Democratic Party; Community Planning Board 8 member; Society for the Preservation of Weeksville and Bedford Stuyvesant History; NAACP; 71st Precinct Community Council; Founding member of the Coalition for Community Empowerment; Founding member of the Brooklyn Coalition of African-American Clergy and Elected Officials; Thurgood Marshall Democratic Club; President of Medgar Evers College Alumni Association; Chancellor's Redesign Committee for High Schools; First Baptist Church of Crown Heights; Charter member Central Brooklyn Federal Credit Union; and Committee to Welcome Nelson Mandela.

Senator Andrews has worked for a number of elected officials and political aspirants and leaders. He has served as Deputy Campaign Manager for Hillary Rodham Clinton; Campaign Coordinator for William Thompson, Jr., Surrogate Court Judge Michael Feinberg, Jesse Jackson, David Dinkins, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes and Assemblyman Clarence Norman, Jr.

Senator Andrews has received many awards for his commitment and work in the communities of the 20th Senatorial District. Some of his awards include: Unity Baptist Church Outstanding Young Man Award; Paul Robeson High School Humanitarian Award; and the Service Scholarship Award and Alumnus of the Year from Medgar Evers College.
