InfoSenator George Onorato was elected to the New York State Senate in a special election in June of 1983, when he won a highly contested three-candidate race. During his first year in the Senate, the Senator was the prime co-sponsor of the used car "lemon law."

Since his election, Senator Onorato has been actively involved in tenants' rights issues and landlord equity, and has sponsored a package of legislation which includes: limiting the length of major capital improvements cost pass-along; the posting of the name and phone number of the landlord's contact person in a prominent place in buildings; and requiring rents to be deposited in an interest bearing account during "rent strikes," a provision included in the Housing Act of 1996.

Acutely aware of Senior Citizen issues, the Senator worked tirelessly toward implementation of EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage Program), and has consistently co-sponsored legislation that would make prescription medication affordable for most of our Senior Citizens. For several years, Senator Onorato sponsored legislation requiring physicians who accept Medicare patients to accept the Medicare determined rate of payment, which became law during the 1990 Legislative Session.

Through his position as a member of the Senate Minority Task Force on Waterfront Development, Senator Onorato has been deeply involved in the redevelopment of the Hunter Point area and the proposed inclusion of public, Senior Citizen, and moderate income housing for the Queens West and similar projects throughout the State. The Senator also continues to be supportive of numerous civic and community renewal groups and their projects. He has served with the Riker's Island Liaison Group that monitors conditions and takes unified action to respond to problems associated with community proximity to Riker's Island. He also serves as a member of the New York State Senate Democratic Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force.

As a member of the Senate Minority Task Force on Vietnam Veterans and the Acting Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, Senator Onorato was a sponsor of legislation providing for graduate and undergraduate student aid to Vietnam veterans, and in 1997 introduced legislation to increase the level of such funding. He sponsored and supported legislation requiring identification of handicapped children of Vietnam veterans in order to assist in developing a data base for research on dioxin-related birth defects.

Greatly concerned over air quality, particularly in the City of New York and the County of Queens, Senator Onorato continues to be involved in negotiations and legislation that would help limit the emission of pollutants caused by power plants.

In January 1992, Senator Onorato was appointed to a Senate leadership position, and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Minority Conference, and as such serves on the Policy Committee of the Senate Democratic Conference. He has also served as a past Treasurer and past President of the Conference of Italian American Legislators for two years. Senator Onorato was elected Secretary/Treasurer of Bricklayer's Local #41 in January 1968, where he served until his election to the State Senate.

The Senator received a Presidential Citation while serving in the United States Army, 118th Medical Battalion from 1950-1952.

As an active participant in community affairs, Senator Onorato has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Taminent Regular Democratic Club (one of the most prominent Democratic Clubs in New York City) since 1972, where he has been a member since 1950. Senator Onorato has been serving as Executive Member and Democratic Leader of the 36th Assembly District since 1977.

As a lifelong resident of Astoria, Senator Onorato graduated from Long Island City High School. He is married to the former Athena Georgakakos and has three adult children, Joanne, George, and Janice, and six grandchildren.
