Info | Empowering Citizens for a Change
Greer Tan Swiston, an IT executive and community leader, is preparing a campaign for the State Representative seat in the 11th Middlesex District, where she has lived for over 13 years. Trained as a software engineer, Greer has worked in the High Tech industry in places like NASA's Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena, CA, dot com start-ups along the 128 circle as well as venerable corporations the likes of Fidelity Investments and Merrill Lynch in downtown Boston and Cambridge. In her 15+ years in the computer industry, she rose steadily through the ranks as a respected technologist and moved into senior management rounding out her technical skills with quality control, project management and overall office operations and finance management.
Building a Stronger State
Having grown up in the Commonwealth, Greer has roots in New England. Her parents, grandmother, along with other extended family, all still live in Massachusetts. The members of her husband's family also have been long time Bay state residents. Greer has a substantial personal experience in the welfare of citizens of all ages and backgrounds. Therefore, add to that her experience in business, her discipline in project and budget management, she is in a prime position to help achieve the much-needed economic and educational reforms.
Greer graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and is accustomed to challenges and hard work. It is clear that Massachusetts is in dire need of reform. The daughter of immigrants, Greer has firsthand experience of the rewards of being an American citizen. So she is answering the call by the Governor and by her community to stand up, be a part of the solution and do her civic duty.
Greer Tan Swiston, 39, and her husband, Robert, are celebrating their 12th anniversary this year. They have two children, Parker (4th grade) and Kayla (Kindergarten), who are students at the Franklin Elementary school and are actively involved in Newton Community programs. Greer also authored a story recently published in the Houston Chronicle.
Dedicated to the Community
In addition to her professional career, Greer has served as the President of the Boston Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers; participated as an Executive Committee Member of the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association; volunteered as a mentor for AFDC recipients; continues to teach at the Chinese Cultural Center Language school and was recently elected Class president for the MIT Class of 1987. Greer has also coached soccer at the West Suburban YMCA, Newton Youth Soccer and the Zervas Kindergarten soccer leagues. Currently, she is also volunteering as one of the troop leaders for the West Newton Daisy Scout troop.
