InfoEach year, when I open my sample ballot, I'm always disappointed to see races in which the Democratic Party did not field a candidate.

No matter how steep a hill an election here is for Democrats to climb, I still feel we should field candidates in all races. The registered Democrats and Independents in our area should know that they are not alone and have a candidate that represents their views. No matter how ruby-red Republican Ocean County is, I don't think the values of the Democratic Party should be surrendered unilaterally. Our position on the issues of the day needs to be articulated. If not, the only thing voters in our area know about Democrats is what they hear from Republicans or Fox "News."

It's amazing to me that the many retired voters in Ocean County vote Republican, given that so many depend on Social Security and Medicare. Both are Democratic programs that conservatives have hated since the 1930s. Both programs are constantly under attack from Republicans, despite their recent protestations to the contrary. Here in New Jersey, the Anchor and Senior Freeze programs are a direct benefit to suburban homeowners and retirees. Both programs came from our side of the aisle. That the people who benefit don't seem to be aware of this fact shows how much our message is failing to get through.

Someone needs to go out in front of voters and tell them that we are the party of the working class and that our economic philosophy—building the economy from the bottom up so that everyone has a chance to come along for the ride—has a much better track record than the Republicans' supply-side approach, which has never worked and is largely responsible for the middle class's demise.
