| Info | Stetson Bennett Jr., Wayne County Clerk of Court for 38 years, has died at age 87.
When he first took office Jan. 1, 1965, he already had 26 years experience in the office having served as chief deputy clerk for his father, Stetson Bennett Sr.
Sheriff John Carter told the Times-Union that Bennett died peacefully at home Thursday morning.
He had served as president of the Georgia Superior Court Clerkâs Association and in 1985 was named clerk of the year by his fellow clerks of court. The award is now named for him.
As he neared the end of his tenure in office, the Georgia House of Representative adopted a resolution honoring Bennett for being longest serving constitutional officer in Georgia.
