Info | RICHARD F. KNEIP was born in Elkton, South Dakota, on January 7, 1933. Kneip attended South Dakota State University and St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Air Force with the German Occupational Forces from 1951 to 1955. Kneip served in the South Dakota State Senate from 1965 to 1971. He was elected Governor of South Dakota in 1970 and reelected in 1972 and 1974. During his tenure, Governor Kneip chaired the Midwestern Governors' Conference and the Democratic Governors' Conference. He also was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Governors' Conference from 1972 to 1973. He resigned as governor in July 1978 when he was appointed as U.S. Ambassador to Singapore. He passed away on March 9, 1987.
