Info3rd California Governor, Lawyer, Politician, Diplomat. He was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He attended Dickinson College, but did not graduate. Prior to his involvement in politics, he was a printer, editor, and lawyer. When the news of the gold strike in California reached him, he decided at the age of 46, to 'go west' and journey overland with his wife Elizabeth and only child, Virginia. He arrived in Sacramento in August of 1849. Sacramento was then a robust frontier town with little more than a motley collection of tents, rude houses, and fledgling commercial enterprises. Before his law practice got underway, he worked auctioneering, cutting wood, and unloading the many arriving steamers along the Sacramento River. In a short span of time, he was sought to become a candidate from Sacramento County for the first legislature of California. He won, and later would be elected 3rd Governor of California. He showed great compassion during the cholera epidemic in Sacramento in 1850 that took hundreds of lives. Lake Tahoe was named Lake Bigler in his honor (although in later years the native name was re-instated). Bigler was appointed by President James Buchanan as minister to Chile.
