Info | Daniel J. Burling was born on January 11, 1947 in Batavia, New York. Following graduation from Ilion High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He then graduated from Herkimer County Community College and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1980 from the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy. He was selected as the 1999 Alumnus of the Year at Herkimer County Community College, and was recently named a charter member of the Phi Lambda Sigma Beta Omicron Chapter in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Buffalo.
As a New York State registered Pharmacist; Dan is President and owner of Burling Drug, Inc. with a store in Attica from 1987-1996 and in Corfu from 1991 to the present. He has also served as an Intern/Staff Pharmacist at Genesee Memorial Hospital and as consultant Pharmacist for the Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia.
Dan’s service in the United States Marine Corps from 1965-1969, included a tour in Vietnam earning him an honorable discharge as a Sergeant E-5. He then attended the Empire State Military Academy, graduating with honors and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve in 1976, serving as a Company Commander and Battalion Adjutant. He was honorably discharged as Captain in 1994.
Dan recently accepted a commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the New York Guard; assigned to Headquarters - Joint Staff, Assistant Director of Government Affairs Section. His sincere interest in veterans’ issues led to his fundraising and sponsorship for the Vietnam Moving Memorial Wall, which was placed in Batavia in May 1995.
Currently a licensed private pilot and aircraft mechanic, Dan's avid interest in aviation has included serving as Airport Manager at Nellis Airport in Fort Plain in 1972. He is also a licensed Charter Boat Captain and former owner/operator of Medicine Man Charters on Lake Ontario.
Dan served on the Genesee County Legislature from 1993 until he was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1998. While on the County Legislature, his responsibilities included Director of the Genesee County Industrial Development Agency; Director of the Soil and Water Conservation Board; member of the Human Services Committee; and a Governor's appointee to the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council. While a County Legislator, Genesee County property tax rates never increased. In fact, Dan fought for and won the first county property tax decrease in almost 20 years.
Dan is a member of the New York Pharmacists’ Association, the National Association of Retail Druggists, and the Pharmacy Association of Western New York. He has served his community as a Past President of the Attica Lions Club, a life member of the Beachhead VFW in Alexander, member of the American Legion Harder-O'Donnell Post 374 in Attica, a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 193, and a Charter Member of the Marine Corp League. Dan previously served as a member of the Genesee County Healthcare Task Force, Tri-Town baseball coach, and member of the Wyoming County Bank Advisory Board.
Dan Burling earned the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Naval Unit Citation. Additionally, he has been awarded for community service by the Attica Chamber of Commerce, and was also named in Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in Business and Industry.
Assemblyman Burling currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Minority Conference, and is a member of the Assembly standing committees on Health, Environmental Conservation, Veterans Affairs, and Housing. He also serves as a member of the state of New Agriculture Task Force, the Legislative Task Force on Integrative Medicine & Agriculture, and the American Legislative Exchange Council.
Dan Burling is married to his wife of over thirty years, Jean, and has two children, Mary and David; and two grandchildren, Alyssa-Daniele and Joseph. Dan and his wife reside in the Town of Alexander.
