Born in Aden to Goan parents. Emigrated to Britain in 1965 and initially lived in Bradford before moving to London. Read Law at Cambridge and was a practicing solicitor before entering politics. Elected for Leicester East at the 1987 General Election, defeating Peter Bruinvels, a Conservative with far right views. Vaz was the first Asian MP since Shapurji Saklatvala (a Parsi Communist) and is now the longest serving Asian MP in the history of the Commons.
Within a few years of his election, Vaz courted controversy by leading demonstrations in his constituency calling for the banning of The Satanic Verses. This was just the first of many controversial episodes in Vaz's career, with other notable incidents including the so-called 'Hinduja Affair' (which led to Vaz's dismissal as Europe Minister) and an incident (for which he was briefly suspended from the Commons) in which he made false accusations against a former member of the police. Yet despite this, Vaz's career has not just survived but has thrived albeit in a low-key manner. A skilled organiser and a more than competent power broker he has become both one of the most powerful members of Labour's NEC, and an effective and high-profile Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee.
