Liz first became involved in politics through education issues as she was elected to the local public school board in 1988 and was re-elected four times. She served as chair of the board and was elected as President of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA) from 1998 to 2002. Liz’s career began as a computer programmer/analyst at the University of Guelph. After her husband, David, graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College, the two moved to Vegreville, Alberta, where Liz taught at the School for the Developmentally Delayed. Following the births of their children, Richard and Allison, Liz returned to the University of Guelph to teach Computer Science.
Liz grew up in Guelph and received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Guelph and a Master of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo.
