Info | Desi Joseph Cuellar
The Cuellar’s were forced to flee Cuba after Fidel Castro’s communist revolution in 1959. Desi’s family managed to escape to Miami, and eventually, they settled in Queens. Desi was born in Flushing, Queens and raised by his single mother and grandparents in his aunt and uncle’s house in Bayside, where they rented the basement apartment.
Before enlisting with the military Desi worked a variety of jobs — from martial arts instructor & competitor in Bayside to waiter and bartender in Astoria and Manhattan — but he always had a desire to do more to serve his community, to show gratitude to the country that had given his family freedom and refuge from a communist dictatorship. With this sense of duty in mind, Desi enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2015 and served with New York’s Famous “Fighting Sixty-Ninth” Infantry Regiment located at the Lexington Army in Manhattan.
Despite working multiple jobs to make ends meet and also serving his country, Desi wound up being homeless and found himself living out of empty military armories for nearly 6 months. However, instead of being discouraged, Desi saw this as an opportunity to transform his struggles into growth and worked tirelessly, applying to everything he could while also performing Military Funeral Honors for fallen Veterans through the Honor Guard program.
While remaining homeless during that time, Desi Cuellar helped perform over 300 Military Funeral Honors for veterans where he folded and presented the American flag to the deceased's next of kin. His faith and his dedication to the United States of America eventually paid off and he was recruited to serve on New York’s Counter Drug Task Force as an Intelligence Analyst. He served on Active-Duty orders for over three years with the Task Force until retiring from the program to run for office. Despite only ever serving in the Army, Desi Cuellar has been awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for his outstanding achievements while on the Counter Drug Task Force. He continues to fulfill his military obligations with the New York Army National Guard and is still currently enlisted.
Desi Cuellar is endorsed by the Republican and Conservative party of Queens and the Bronx. Additionally he has also been endorsed by the pro-life New York State Right to Life Committee, The New York State Young Republicans, President of the New York City Fire Marshal Benevolent Association - William Kregler, former New York State Assemblyman Matthew Mirones, retired NYPD Lieutenant and TV commentator Dr.Darrin Porcher, and former NYPD Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik.
