Info | Representative Glenn Cummings is serving his third term in the Maine House of Representatives and his first as House Majority Leader. As Majority Leader, he is the political spokesperson for the House Democratic caucus, which holds the Majority in the House of Representatives with 74 members. His office provides staff and support for all of the House Democrats and for Maine’s two tribal representatives.
In his second term, Rep. Cummings served as Chair of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee where he led the effort to enact a new, more progressive school funding formula for the state of Maine; one that focuses on the needs of children rather than property valuations. In his first term of service he championed a new law requiring lead screenings for all Maine children and was named Legislator of the Year by the Maine Medical Association.
Rep. Cummings works as the director of the new Entrepreneurial Center at Southern Maine Community College and as an instructor in the business department. With the help of his colleagues, he established the Entrepreneurial Center which provides Maine students with the entrepreneurial training and the confidence they need to bring their ideas to the marketplace.
Rep. Cummings earned a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School Of Government and also holds a Master’s in Education from Brown University. Before coming to the Legislature, he worked as a high school teacher in economics and history.
A seventh generation Mainer, Rep. Cummings lives in Portland with his wife Leslie Appelbaum, and their two children Kiernan and Skyler. He currently serves on the board of the Maine Center for Educational Services and as a trustee of the Breakwater School in Portland. He is also a former board member of Maine Association of Partners in Education and of the Portland Arts and Cultural Alliance.
