InfoMontana Secretary of State Mike Cooney, 44, has worked to make government on all levels better for Montanans. A fourth generation Montanan, Mike's roots run deep in the history of Montana. Both his great-grandfather and grandfather served in Montana public office.

Since first being elected Secretary of State in 1988, Mike has worked hard to cut bureaucratic red tape and make government more accessible to all Montanans.

During his tenure, Mike has focused on making it easier to do business in Montana and creating innovative ways for Montanans to register to vote. As a result, Montana boasts one of the highest voter registration and voter turnouts in the nation and has remained at the forefront of business practice.

The National Association of Secretaries of State recently honored Mike by electing him President, an office which he assumed in August of 1996. Recently, Mike was elected as Co-chair of the Western Regional Primary task force.

In addition, Mike serves on the Federal Election Commission's Clearinghouse Advisory Panel, is active with Montana American Legion Boys and Girls State, Helena Area Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, is Chairman of the State Capitol Restoration Commission, previously served on the Helena YMCA Board of Directors and works with other local charitable organizations.

Prior to being elected to Secretary of State, Mike served on the staff of United States Senator Max Baucus. Mike's work for Senator Baucus spanned 1979-1988, during which he worked in Butte, Washington, D.C., and Helena.

In 1976, Mike was elected to the Montana House of Representatives at the age of 22 and was reelected in 1978.

A graduate of Butte High School and the University of Montana, Mike and his wife Dee Ann have three children and live in Helena.
