Info | Barry B. Telford was first elected to Texas House of Representatives in 1986. He is currently serving his ninth term representing District 1 which includes all of Bowie, Cass, Marion, and Morris Counties.
Mr. Telford serves as Vice Chair of the Pensions & Investments Committee, which oversees the state retirement trust funds and insurance plans for all active and retired state and public school employees. Telford has served on this committee since 1995, and has led the effort to improve retirement benefits and ensure the stability of the pension trust funds.
Rep. Telford also serves on the powerful Calendars Committee, the pivotal committee through which all legislation must pass before being considered by the full House of Representatives. Lastly, Telford serves on the Judicial Affairs Committee overseeing issues related to Texas courts and the state Attorney General's office.
Rep. Telford previously chaired the House Committee on Calendars (1999-2003), the House Pensions & Investments Committee (1995-1999), the House Select Committee on Rural Development (1999-2001), and the House Joint Committee on State Investment Policy (1996).
While in the Texas House, Rep. Telford has served on the following House committees: Appropriations (1991-1995), Corrections (1987-1997; VC, CBO), House Administration (1995-1999), Human Services (1999-2003), Local and Consent Calendars (1993-1995; VC), Public Safety (1987-1991), Sentencing and Recidivism (1987-1989), Teacher Health Insurance (1999-2003), Teenage Suicide (1987-1989), TRS-Care (1997-1999), and Ways & Means (1997-1999).
Rep. Telford has also served on the Criminal Justice Policy Council (1989-1997), the State Pension Review Board (1995-present), the Sunset Advisory Commission (1993-1997), the Texas State Artist Committee (1997-1999; Co-Chair), and the National Conference of State Legislatures Task Force on Social Security Reform.
Telford lives in DeKalb with his wife, Marsha, and operates his family business, Telford Gas and Furniture. Rep. and Mrs. Telford have two grown children, Christina and John.
Rep. Telford attended Texarkana Junior College and graduated from North Texas State University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
