InfoJohn O'Toole is currently MPP for Durham, and Deputy Whip and Transportation Critic for the Official Opposition. He has been re-nominated as the PC Party Candidate for this riding in the coming General Election, October 2007.

John has been elected to serve in public office for over 20 years. In 1982, he was elected as a school trustee, and eventually as municipal councillor, Durham Regional Councillor and, presently, a Member of Provincial Parliament.

He was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1995 as the Member for Durham East. In 1999, he was re-elected to represent the new riding of Durham. He has served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Health.

On October 2, 2003, John was re-elected for a third consecutive term as MPP for Durham Riding. He currently serves on the Legislature's Standing Committee on Social Policy.

As well as being a strong advocate for his constituents in Durham Riding, John successfully introduced a Private Member's Bill allowing owners of vintage vehicles to display Year of Manufacture licence plates. He has also introduced Private Members Bills on the safe use of cell phones while driving, and on Irish heritage. He is a strong advocate for initiatives that support the environment, such as his Private Member's Bill on regulating paper fibre biosolids.

Some of the committees on which John has served at Queen's Park include: the Electricity Conservation and Supply Task Force; the Cabinet Committee on Environment and Energy; the Select Committee on Alternative Fuel Sources; Ontario Gas Prices Review Task Force (Co-Chair); the Red Tape Commission; and the Select Committee on Ontario Hydro Nuclear Affairs.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, John is a graduate of the University of Toronto. Prior to being elected MPP, he worked for over 30 years in a variety of positions at General Motors in Ontario and Quebec.

Before arriving at Queen's Park, John had been elected to the following positions: school board trustee and local and regional councillor for the Town of Newcastle (now the Municipality of Clarington, in the Region of Durham). As a municipal councillor, he served as chair of three municipal budgets before being elected as a Durham Regional Councillor. He has also served as chair for Public Works in Clarington and as a member of the Regional Health and Social Services Committee.

John and his wife, Peggy, an elementary school teacher who retired in 2006, have lived in Durham Region for 25 years. John and Peggy have raised five children and have three grandchildren.

John's community service has included municipal and provincial library boards, the Conservation Authority, the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC), and the Bowmanville Museum Board. It is his privilege to represent the people in the great Riding of Durham, which includes Clarington and Scugog as well as north and east Oshawa.
