InfoMichael Prue has a long and distinguished career standing up for the working people of Beaches-East York.

Michael was first elected as an East York councillor in 1988. He went on to serve as East York's mayor from 1993 to 1997, when East York was erased by Toronto's forced amalgamation. After 1997, until elected as MPP in a byelection in 2001, Michael served as councillor in the new City of Toronto.

Throughout his career, Michael has stood firm for the things that matter.

As mayor of East York he maintained or expanded funding for vital services such as police, transit, child care, children's programs, and the homeless. He supported city measures to improve housing for seniors, children, and the disabled. He voted against sending Toronto's garbage to Kirkland Lake and he was part of the NDP team that defeated the Adams Mine garbage proposal.

As mayor, Michael was widely respected for bringing in five consecutive budgets with no tax increase, cutting East York's debt by $7.8 million, and ushering in new industry, commercial growth, and jobs to the community.

Michael and his wife, Shirley Curson-Prue, have lived in Beaches-East York for over 18 years. He is a well-known champion of the community.

He has a B.A. from the University of Toronto in Political Science and Anthropology and an M.A. from Carleton University in Canadian Studies. Before entering politics, Michael worked as counsel to the Minister of Employment and Immigration.
