| Info | Bonnie Garcia was elected to the State Assembly in 2002, and is the only Latina Woman Republican in the State Legislature.
She was a key member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Transition Team and has been named a delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention.
Focused on job creation and retention, Assemblywoman Garcia is the vice-chair of the Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee. She also serves as a member of the Education; Human Services and Local Government Committees, and was appointed to the Select Committees on Community Colleges, Workforce Investment, Mobile Homes, and Children's Physical and Mental well-being.
Born on the Lower East Side of New York to teen parents, she has overcome crushing poverty and a crime-ridden neighborhood on her way to success.
Her diverse and multi-faceted career as a businesswoman and public servant span more than a decade, during which time she acquired expertise in small business development, public administration, public safety, education and quality housing.
After many years of taking night and weekend classes, at age 38, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University.
Assemblywoman Garcia is active in her community, and has served on many boards to foster small business growth, increase access to education and affordable healthcare and to assist families transitioning from welfare-to-work programs.
Her legislative priorities include removing barriers to keep jobs in California, protecting funding for local government, increasing access to higher education, protecting children from sexual predators, improving child support collection efforts and structural reform in the state budget process.
