| Info | Speaker Fabian Núñez (D- 46th District) was elected to the California State Assembly in 2002 and sworn in as the State's 66th Speaker on February 9, 2004.
Described by colleagues as affable, insightful, and prudent, Speaker Núñez has laid out clear legislative goals including providing affordable prescription drugs, protecting jobs and wages for working families, and keeping the doors of the state's public universities open to all qualified students.
In his February 2004 inaugural speech, Speaker Núñez called on members of the Assembly to commit to passing a fiscally and socially responsible budget. "We all are ready to face the challenge of balancing the budget head-on. And we must start now," he said.
Despite limited revenues, Speaker Núñez was able to protect health and human services priorities as well as keep the state's promise of ensuring that all qualified students attend the state university of their choice.
The Speaker also urged his colleagues to meet the challenge of reforming the state's workers' compensation system. The Legislature passed meaningful reform this April.
He continues to work to improve the system and bring rates down for California's businesses.
Major legislation passed during the Speaker's tenure includes a prescription drug package to allow the state and its residents to buy less expensive pharmaceutical drugs from Canada. Other legislation included tough consumer protections for car buyers, natural resource conservation measures, and a jobs package designed to raise the state minimum wage and halt the offshoring of California jobs.
This past year, Núñez authored bills to curb pollution, aid small business, help the homeless, discourage predatory lending, improve working conditions for hotel attendants, and offer solutions to California's long-term energy needs.
He also authored the Reliable Electric Service Act of 2004 (AB 2006). This legislation created a clear, durable regulatory framework to stimulate much-needed investment in new power resources while also putting California back in charge of its energy future.
During his first year in office, Assemblyman Núñez scored several bipartisan legislative victories, including measures signed into law providing greater rights to renters when nuisances or substandard conditions are not corrected and ensuring school bathrooms are given priority when maintenance funds are spent.
The Speaker's deep commitment to improving our State's business climate is reflected in his efforts to implement critical energy reforms and make the necessary investments in education, infrastructure, and affordable housing.
Protecting and improving education in our State is the primary goal of the Speaker. He believes ensuring a quality education is not only good for business, it is essential to leveling the playing field and building a state in which, through a quality education, every child, no matter their background, can gain the skills necessary to make dreams into reality.
Prior to being elected to the Assembly, from 2000-2002, Núñez was government affairs director for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In this capacity, he tackled a broad range of education issues and secured millions in funding for school construction projects, children's health insurance, and low-performing schools.
From 1996 to 2000, he served as political director for the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.
Speaker Núñez, 37, earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in political science and education from Pitzer College in Claremont. He resides in downtown Los Angeles and has three children.
