InfoEthel Rose Maharg was born in Cuba, New Mexico. Her mother’s side of the family has been in New Mexico since Coronado’s conquest. Her grandmother, Isabella Cordova, married a German Immigrant, Aron Eichwald. Ethel’s family has a long history in the politics of New Mexico.

Ethel’s uncle, Alex Eichwald, wrote a book, “Don Agustin 1862-1927 An Immigrant, A Merchant, and a Rancher.” In the book Ethel’s uncle explains her grandfather, Aron Augustine Eichwald’s, history as a Republican in Cuba. Her grandfather served as a state Senator and Sandoval County Commissioner.

Service has always been important to Ethel’s family, on both sides of the political aisle. From her Republican grandfather to her Democrat father who served as a Mayor of Cuba to her Democrat brother, a county commissioner.

Ethel says, her family isn’t the first family in two different political parties – Roosevelt County was named for Teddy, not Franklin.

Ethel followed her father’s footsteps and served as Mayor of Cuba, but she stayed in her grandfather’s party and was elected as a Republican.

Ethel was the first woman to be elected Mayor of Cuba.

Ethel is an alumnus of University of Phoenix where she received her degree in business administration. She has owned and operated several small businesses, been an educator, and managed two bank branches.

Ethel serves on the Leadership Team for Women's Leadership Development and the board of New Beginnings Church of God where she is an active member and commissioned AACC lay counselor. She served at Care Net Pregnancy Center of Albuquerque as the Client Services Director for five years.

In 2018 Ethel coordinated the Convoy of Hope for Albuquerque to help bring $1 million worth of goods and services to the community. She worked with the Hispanic Action Network to distribute 350,000 voter guides throughout the state in an effort to help with the last governor’s race.

Ethel is a contributing author of two books: The Unstoppable Woman’s Guide to Emotional Well Being, and The Unstoppable Entrepreneur. She is a keynote speaker, a trainer and served as a program host for a KNAT TV public affairs program. Her audiences love her openness and her no-nonsense humorous approach. Ethel encourages people to dream big and attempt the impossible by stepping out in faith and trusting God to lead in victory. She is currently serving the state as the Executive Director for Right to Life Committee of New Mexico.

Ethel and her husband, Dean, have been married for 37 years. They have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Her favorite title is Nonni.
