| Info | Rebecca Cohn was elected to the Assembly in November 2000. Prior to assuming office, Assemblymember Cohn worked for nearly ten years as an international business consultant. In this capacity, she helped firms in industries including utilities, banking, manufacturing, transportation, and high tech to adopt new technologies and competitive work practices. Rebecca's experience in the consulting field taught her "how to make things work." She brings this approach to her role as a legislator, crafting solutions to the tough issues facing the 15th Senate District and the State that combine responsiveness, coordination, and efficiency.
During her first year in office, Assemblymember Cohn served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care, making her one of only two freshman Members to chair a standing committee. To this role, Rebecca Cohn brought more than 20 years of experience as a licensed physical therapist, specializing in helping seniors, children, and injured workers. As Chair, Assemblymember Cohn expanded affordable long-term care coverage and increased oversight of adult day health care. As a member of the Assembly Committee on Health, she continues to pursue her driving passion to provide for the health care needs of the women, children, and seniors of California.
In December 2002, Speaker of the House Herb Wesson appointed Assemblymember Cohn as Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, an oversight board that ensures tax dollars are spent efficiently and in the public interest.
In February 2002, Speaker Wesson selected Assemblymember Cohn to create and chair a new Assembly standing committee focusing on arts, entertainment, sports, tourism and Internet media. Drawing on her experience in developing new enterprises as a business consultant, Assemblymember Cohn will craft this new committee to address a wide array of business and cultural issues that impact the lives of all Californians.
As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Domestic Violence, Assemblymember Cohn raises awareness of the issue of domestic violence in California and works to provide increased protection and services to victims of domestic violence. During her first year in office, Assemblymember Cohn's domestic violence legislation included a measure to require misdemeanor domestic violence batterers to appear before a judge, and an initiative to require police officers to make a reasonable attempt to remove any deadly weapons discovered at a domestic violence incident. Assemblymember Cohn still serves as an active member of the Domestic Violence Council of Santa Clara County.
During her first year in office, Governor Davis signed every piece of legislation that Assemblymember Cohn sent to him.
Born in California as Rebecca Wilson, Rebecca Cohn and her four brothers were raised in Fredericksburg, Texas by their mother. As a youth, Rebecca and her brothers worked picking pecans in the orchards near their home to help make ends meet. Rebecca graduated from Fredericksburg High School, attended the University of Texas at Austin, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Galveston-Medical Branch in 1976.
Rebecca Cohn lives in Saratoga with her husband, investment manager Ron Cohn, and son Andrew, who attends Boston University.
