InfoIn Flushing, NY, John Porro was born in a Salvation Army Hospital and adopted by his stay-at-home mother, and his father, a lifelong union sheet metal worker. When he was about 5, they moved from Jackson Heights, Queens to West Babylon on Long Island. His father was a volunteer in the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department from 1976 until his death in 2004. John’s parents instilled the values of hard work, loyalty, and community in him at a very young age. His father was a little league coach and John’s Webelos leader. His mother was on every level of the PTA and also served 3 years as John’s Cub Scout Leader. She, along with a few other engaged parents, founded the West Babylon Public Library because they saw the need in the community. His family was neither rich nor poor and his parents instilled in him a gratefulness for what you have and an obligation to give back.

He became an Eagle Scout his senior year in High School after running a blood drive as his Eagle Scout Project. John attended SUNY Binghamton for his undergraduate studies where he graduated with a BS in Biology and a Minor in History. His mother passed away from lung cancer in his sophomore year. Upon graduation, he moved back home with his father and took a job teaching math, biology, chemistry, and physics at Monsignor McClancy High School in Jackson Heights, Queens. Following his father’s footsteps; he joined the West Babylon Fire Department’s Rescue Squad and became an EMT and then an AEMT. He rose through the ranks of the Rescue Squad achieving the rank of Captain. His volunteer work sparked an interest in furthering his medical knowledge and after teaching high school for 7 years he left the profession to go back to school.

He attended Cornell University’s Physician Assistant Program and graduated top of his class. He took a job as a PA in the hospital in which he was born. He worked there for 14 years as a PA in their ICU, rapid response team, stroke team, & general medical floors. When September 11th occurred, John responded and spent Sep. 12th and 14th digging through the rubble of Tower #2. He started his MBA at Baruch College in 2012. In March of 2013 he was headhunted by Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas to be the Manager of Advanced Practice for the Hospitalist, Cardiology, and Renal Divisions. He joined Parkland Health and Hospital System in March of 2013. In 2016, He finished his MBA and MS in Healthcare Administration at the University of Texas at Dallas. In Jan 2017, John was promoted to a newly created position – Director of Advanced Practice. This new role has the Advanced Practice Providers (PAs, NPs, and CNS) for the hospital, outpatient specialty clinics, and the Dallas County Jail’s Correctional Mental Health team reporting to it.

John is married to his wife Kamie of four years. He has been active for 3 years in the state’s professional organization – the Texas Association of Physician Assistants (TAPA). He currently serves on their Board of Directors holding the position of Treasurer. He also brought in a new leadership structure for the hospital system he works with. A leadership based on integrity; holding the hospital and employees accountable for providing top-level care to our most vulnerable population.
