InfoIn 1962, Ed H. Smith was encouraged to get involved in a Black Independent Aldermanic Campaign. The campaign’s outcome was a disaster. Smith, however, decided to stay involved in local politics and began to organize the 28th Ward. By 1972, he decided to challenge the Democratic Party’s candidate for Alderman. He was defeated, but ran again in 1976, 79 and 80. By 1983, Ed had 350 volunteers and his name had become a household word throughout the ward. He filed his Primary Nominating Petitions in a four-way race. Smith, won the general election with 64% of the vote. One year later, he won the Democratic Ward Committeeman’s slot with 72% of the vote. In 1988, he successfully ran and became the State Central Committeeman of the 7th Congressional District.
During his 1st term in the City Council, Smith became known for his hard work and diligence. He is now one of the most highly respected elected officials on the council. Experienced in economic development, he spearheaded the Passenger Facility Initiative at the National League of Cities, which brought ninety million dollars to Chicago. He brought the Lincoln Challenge Program to the west side of Chicago for high school drop outs. He was the first to lead of drug houses and businesses. In 1 998, be began open air offices in high volume drug site pickets to thwart illicit activity.

Ed H. Smith taught school and worked for Chicago Economic Development Corporation to promote Minority Business Enterprises through financial, contract procurement and managerial assistance using unfair practices against minorities.

Ed H. Smith has traveled some 16 different countries. He has been cited with numerous awards, including WHO’S WHO IN AMERICAN POLITICS, UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES. Smith currently serves as Chairman of the City’s Committee on Health .

He is also Vice Chairman of committee on zoning, and member of finance, budget ,buildings, rules and aviation committees. He serves on national league of city as a member on the transportation, infrastructure and service committee. Member of national black Caucus of local elected officials and also Chairman of the city council black Caucus. He is a Member of north east plan commission. Ed H Smith is a member of Shiloh M.B. Church . He is a published author of "Love The Town Couldn't Stop" & "Looking for Daddy". He is a executive producer of a movie "Love Relations".

Ed H. Smith received his B.S. degree from Alcorn State College in Lorman, Mississippi and his M.A. from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, Illinois. During his high school and college years, Ed H. Smith developed a tenacious drive to succeed. That drive has carried over and become the hallmark of his character, propelling him to one achievement after another.
