First elected to the Legislature in 1978; re-elected in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1993, 1998 and 1999. Speaker of the House on three separate occasions;
first MLA elected Speaker by his legislative peers. Cabinet duties have included Minister of: Consumer Affairs; Health; Labour; the Environment; Housing and Municipal Affairs; Transportation and Public Works; Human Resources; Public Service Commission; Chairman of Management Board; Registrar General, Solicitor General; Provincial Secretary; Chair of Priorities and Planning Committee; Chair of Treasury and Policy Board; Government House Leader.

Community Involvement:
Past Member of Board of Health for Hants West; Past Member of Hants County Senior Citizens Home Board; West Hants Municipal Council; West Hants School Board; Honourary Lieutenant Colonel with 420th Air Reserve Squadron, Shearwater.

Family:
Married to Jo-Marie (nee MacIsaac); two sons.
