-Military: Pilot during the Second World War with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1973 with the rank of Squadron Leader after 25 years of service.

Political Career:
First elected to the Legislature in 1978; re-elected in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1993, 1998 and 1999. Speaker of the House on three separate occasions;
first MLA elected Speaker by his legislative peers. Cabinet duties have included Minister of: Consumer Affairs; Health; Labour; the Environment; Housing and Municipal Affairs; Transportation and Public Works; Human Resources; Public Service Commission; Chairman of Management Board; Registrar General, Solicitor General; Provincial Secretary; Chair of Priorities and Planning Committee; Chair of Treasury and Policy Board; Government House Leader.

Community Involvement:
Past Member of Board of Health for Hants West; Past Member of Hants County Senior Citizens Home Board; West Hants Municipal Council; West Hants School Board; Honourary Lieutenant Colonel with 420th Air Reserve Squadron, Shearwater.

Family:
Married to Jo-Marie (nee MacIsaac); two sons.
