Alexander was born in New York City on 28 October 1906; received a B.A. degree from Princeton University, 1928; received an LL.B. degree from Harvard Law School, 1931; married Susanne Dimock Tilton, June 1929; admitted to New York bar, 1932; was an associate of the firm of Carter, Ledyard and Milburn in New York City, 1921-1940, and partner, 1940-1949; was director of the First National Bank of Hoboken (New Jersey), 1931-1933; was commissioned first lieutenant, U.S. Army, in 1942, and served in the European and Mediterranean Theaters of Operation; was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945, having attained the rank of lieutenant colonel; was a member of the State Department's Foreign Service Selection Board, 1947; served as consultant on security and personnel matters to the Atomic Energy Commission, 1947; was director of the New York Casualty Company, 1941-1949; director of the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company, 1931-1948; director of the Hoboken Rail Road Warehouse and Steamship Connecting Company, 1931-1947; was unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate from New Jersey in 1948 and 1952; was Assistant Secretary of the Army, 22 August 1949-23 May 1950; was Under Secretary of the Army, 24 May 1950-11 April 1952; served as state treasurer of New Jersey, 1954-1955; was a member and vice chairman of the board of governors, Rutgers University (the main library of the school is named for him); was a member of the New Jersey Commission on State Tax Policy in 1956 and Commission chairman in 1962; director of the Free Europe Committee, Inc., of New York City, 1959, and Committee president, 1959-1961; died in Bernardsville, New Jersey, on 4 September 1979.
