InfoMark Barnett grew up right here in South Dakota. He was born in Sioux Falls on September 6, 1954 to Tom and Dorothy Barnett. Mark's ancestors settled in Dakota Territory in the late 1800's, and quickly built a reputation for honesty, faith, public service and BIG families. As the 4th of 12 kids, Mark understands the importance of family values.

Today, Mark is proud to have family living in dozens of communities across South Dakota. Mark has always worked hard, putting himself through college and law school at the University of South Dakota

by busing tables and working construction jobs. At college, Mark met his wife of 22 years, Deb, who is now a speech therapist and administrator. Deb grew up in Vermillion, the daughter of Dean and Irene Swisher.

Mark believes in the importance of volunteerism and community service, and particularly enjoys working to help kids. He currently serves on the board of directors for Children's Home Foundation and the Sioux Council Boy Scouts. He has also served on board of the OAHE YMCA and the United Way, and has helped organizations like the March of Dimes and the American Diabetes Association.

Mark was first elected Attorney General in 1990. In his 1994 re-election, he was the top vote-getter of any candidate on the ballot, receiving more votes than any previous Attorney General in state history. He set another South Dakota record in 1998, when he became the first candidate for statewide office to run unopposed.

Throughout his time as Attorney General, Mark has built a broad-based coalition of support. He has developed grassroots support across South Dakota by driving 30,000 miles a year to visit with consumers, seniors, kids, and taxpayers.

Mark and Deb live in Pierre where they are raising their sons John and Jim, who were adopted as infants. In his spare time, Mark enjoys taking the boys to swimming lessons and soccer games
